The Series 7 exam has 125 multiple-choice questions. You have 3 hours and 45 minutes (225 minutes) to complete the exam. Of the 125 questions, 10 are unscored pilot questions.
You need a score of 72% to pass the Series 7 exam.
The Series 7 exam costs $245 USD. You must be sponsored by a FINRA member firm to register for the exam.
The Series 7 covers four major job functions: Seeks Business for the Broker-Dealer (9%), Opens Accounts (11%), Provides Customers with Information and Makes Recommendations (73%), and Obtains and Verifies Purchase and Sales Instructions (7%).
You must pass the SIE exam and be sponsored by a FINRA member firm before taking the Series 7. Many candidates take the SIE first, then the Series 7.
The Series 7 is a broader license that allows you to sell all types of securities (stocks, bonds, options, mutual funds, etc.), while the Series 6 is limited to mutual funds, variable annuities, and UITs. The Series 7 exam is longer and more comprehensive.
The Series 7 is widely considered one of the most challenging FINRA exams due to its broad scope covering 14 domains. Most candidates study for 2-3 months with dedicated practice tests and structured review.
